Kaşifler ve bilim adamlarından oluşan bir ekibin araştırma görevine çıktığı Antarktika´da çok şiddetli kış koşulları hüküm sürmektedir. Kurtarma rehberi Jerry Shepard´ın (Paul Walker) yönettiği araştırma ekibinde kartograf/haritacı Cooper (Jason Biggs) ve tecrübeli jeolog Davis (Bruce Greenwood) vardır. Ölümcül bir kazadan sekiz kızak köpeğinin sayesinde yeni kurtulmuşlardır. Oradan bir an önce uzaklaşmak zorunda kaldıkları için sevgili köpeklerini donmuş arazide terk etmek zorunda kalırlar. Giderken geri döneceklerine dair söz vermişlerdir.Antarktika´da yüzyılın en büyük fırtınası yaklaşırken her türlü ulaşım imkanı kesilmiştir. Buzlar arasında mahsur kalan köpekler, yüzyılın en acımasız kışına karşı yaşam mücadelesi vermektedir. Bu arada sevgili köpeklerini geride bırakan Jerry Shepard da, maceraperest ruhlu güzel pilot Katie´nin (Moon Bloodgood) yardımıyla olanaksız gibi görünen bir kurtarma operasyonuna girişmek üzeredir. Aralarında sarsılmaz dostluk bağları bulunan insanlarla köpekler, Antarktika´nın görkemli ama bir o kadar da acımasız doğasında birbirlerine yeniden kavuşabilmek adına cesaret, dayanıklılık ve inanç gerektiren çok büyük bir yolculuğa çıkacaklardır.

Jerry Shepherd (Paul Walker) is a sled-team guide at an Antarctica research base, and has been commissioned by a UCLA professor, Davis McLaren (Bruce Greenwood), to take him to Mount Melbourne to attempt to collect a rare meteorite from the planet Mercury. He does so against his own intuition, which tells him that it is too late in the season (January) to complete such a treacherous route.After several mishaps - of which the dogs save McLaren`s life twice - Shepherd and McLaren make it back to base camp and are immediately evacuated, as all other personnel have been ordered to do throughout the area due to impending major storms. With too much weight in the plane to carry all the personnel and dogs, the human team medically evacuates Shepherd and McLaren with a plan to return later for the dogs. So the dogs are temporarily left behind but it soon becomes apparent that no rescue will be attempted prior to the next season. The dogs must struggle for survival alone in the Antarctic wilderness until Shepherd eventually returns to rescue them, more than six months later. Six of the eight dogs survive. The two who die are Dewey and Old Jack with the six survivors being Buck, Max, Mya, Shadow, Shorty and Truman.The turning point in the film is the moment when McLaren sees a drawing by his little son, with the label: My Hero - the Dogs who saved Daddy. This inspires the professor to realize the magnitude of his ingratitude and he finds a way to finance a rescue mission.
