Overview: For many of the people who discovered Celtic music in the '60s, '70s, '80s, or '90s, the Chieftains are the ultimate Irish band. But that doesn't make them purists. While leader/founder Paddy Moloney is indeed a master of traditional IrishCeltic music, not everything that the Chieftains have recorded is totally traditional -- over the years, they have combined Celtic music with everything from rock to country to Chinese music. Assembled in 2002, this collection (which emphasizes RCABMG recordings from the '90s) reminds listeners how experimental and eclectic the Chieftains can be. Many of the 19 tracks find Moloney's band joining forces with major non-Irish artists, including the Rolling Stones on "The Rocky Road to Dublin," Sting on "Mo Ghile Mear," Joni Mitchell on "The Magdalene Laundries," and reggae singer Ziggy Marley on father Bob Marley's "Redemption Song." While CelticIrish folk is the foundation of The Wide World Over: A 40 Year Celebration, these recordings are hardly the work of a band that is oblivious to other forms of music. "Guadalupe," which unites the Chieftains with Linda Ronstadt and Los Lobos, successfully combines Mexican, Irish, and Spanish elements -- and Moloney's appreciation of traditional Chinese music asserts itself on "Full of Joy." Meanwhile, the bluegrass standard "Cotton-Eyed Joe" finds the Chieftains joined by country singer Ricky Skaggs, and together they find the parallels between bluegrass and Celtic music (which makes perfect sense because the jigs, reels, and airs that Irish and Scottish immigrants brought with them to the U.S. paved the way for bluegrass, country, and Anglo-American folk). Although certainly not the last word on the Chieftains, this CD has many fine moments and isn't a bad way to celebrate their 40th anniversary. [The Japanese release of The Wide World Over includes the bonus track "Sake in the Jar," featuring Akiko Yano.]
