Matilda Koen-Sarano: Matilda Koen-Sarano was born in Milan, Italy, in 1939 as the daughter of a Sephardic family of Turkish descendants. During the Second World War, all of her family went into hiding into the mountains to get away from National-Socialists. Post war, his father became the secretary of Milan Jewish Community until 1969. She was educated in Jewish community schools and the University of Milan. She moved to Israel after marrying Aharon Cohen, the Head of National Ladino Language and Culture Agency, in 1960. She's been living in Jerusalem since 1962. She's been writing in the magazines "Aki Jerusalem", published in Ladino, and "Los Muestros", published in Brussels since 1979. She has been working in (Israeli Radio) Kol Israel's Sephardic Program and prepares the news twice a week since the 1980's. In addition she hosts a program about folkloric tales and songs. She graduated from Italian Literature, Ladino and Folklore Department (B.A) of Jerusalem Hebrew University. Since then she has attended to many international Sephardic conferences. After working in the Office of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem for 23 years, she retired in 1997. Sarano has made it her life mission to preserve the Ladino Language. Since 1996, she's been teaching this language in Ben Gurion University in Negev; and since 1991 she's been teaching about Ladino Folklore in Amalia Highschool in Jerusalem.
